A message from the Superintendent of Schools regarding a recent article in the Journal News
This weekend the Journal News ran an article regarding Carmel community club lacrosse teams which presented certain inaccuracies about the interscholastic program of the Carmel Central School District. Of particular concern were the allegations regarding the steps taken by the school district to check the background of our coaches. It is important to know that all CCSD coaches (head coaches, as well as assistant coaches) are subject to formal background checks and are formally appointed to their positions by the Board of Education.

It should be noted that the school district modified lacrosse team mentioned in the article operated during the spring of 2011 and had a head coach cleared through a background check review process and appointed by the Board.  The individual cited in the article, who “may have informally helped with the team,” has never been employed by the Carmel Central School District, nor has he ever officially coached any sport in our interscholastic sports program.

Under the direction of our Athletic Director, the district is proud to operate 54 teams, providing opportunities for nearly 1000 male and female athletes.  Over the years, parents and other interested community members have volunteered, providing a wide range of services to our school district, including our sports teams and clubs.  The Athletic Director monitors and restricts any volunteers from working with our teams, coaches or student athletes unless they have been properly vetted through a formal background check and approved by the Board of Education.
