Middle School Students Get Cooking

It is full bellies and sweet dreams for sixth grade students in Marie Taylor’s Family and Consumer Science class at George Fischer Middle School. The students recently completed units on sewing and cooking, which took their skills to the next level creating pillows and delicious homemade meals!

Students had the opportunity to design and sew a pillow that showcased their personalities as well as incorporated the Carmel Cs. The project was a capstone to the unit, which covered sewing safety and vocabulary, measuring skills, pattern symbols and cutting patterns, sewing tools, as well as the running and overcast stitches.

When it came to the cooking unit, the students started from scratch – first they prepped with lessons on the science behind cooking, interpreting nutrition labels, and what constitutes healthy eating. From there, they moved into kitchen and food safety and measuring skills on their journey to create something delicious.

Whether it was healthy muffins using applesauce or a huge Stromboli, the students all have the opportunity to try out each class recipe at home.

“I made the apple sauce puff muffins, and they were so good that even my sister ate them!” said student Jadyn Menton.

As part of their assignments, students take pictures of every step of their cooking process – prep work, measuring, cooking and, of course, the final product!

“I take as many pictures of food at home to share as possible, because I believe it inspires the students to cook at home,” said Marie Taylor.

The class was so inspired that a friendly unofficial burrito-cooking competition even ensued.

“As challenging as it has been to not be able to cook in school, the exchange between me and the students with pictures from our home cooking has caught on.” said Taylor.
