Welcome to the Athletics Department

Dear families:

Our goal in athletics is to help students develop a healthy lifestyle and strong physical and mental habits that can last a lifetime.

Carmel Athletics showcases the many successes of our school community. Carmel High School was named a Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction because we encourage our athletes to work as hard in class as they do on the field. We see athletics as a way to build community, and so we ensure that our coaches are trained to focus on character development.

The Carmel Central School District offers more than 70 interscholastic teams at the modified, freshman, junior varsity and varsity level.

Sincerely,
Christopher Salumn
Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics

Off-Season Workouts: Essential Information

According to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) handbook, the following language applies to off-season workouts:

NYSPHSAA Handbook (PDF)-New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA Handbook (PDF) - New York State Public High School Athletic Association)

  • School sponsored activities conducted out of the sport season such as general conditioning, weight training, weightlifting, intramurals, recreation, open gyms, club activities and camps are permitted: 1.  if such programs are not mandated by coaches or school personnel; 2. if such programs are available to all students.
  • Non-school sponsored activities are permitted if such programs are not mandated by coaches or school personnel.  It is recommended that no school equipment be used for these programs as per State Comptroller Opinion 85-37.

All out of season workouts held on a Carmel Central School District site/facility that are run by board approved coaches for a particular sport season during the current academic year, are approved and directly affiliated with the Carmel Central School District.

Any off-site off-season training is not associated with or an approved activity of the Carmel Central School District.  Parents/guardians should understand this difference and provide appropriate permission prior to participation/attendance.

Examples:

District Affiliated: Weightroom activities at CHS, workouts held in a school gym, workouts on the turf/grass fields on our campus, use of the CHS or GFMS tennis courts.

Non-District Affiliated: Basketball summer or fall leagues played off-site, winter lacrosse leagues played off-site, fall baseball played off-site.  Camps or clinics requiring a payment.

*Please note that these are just a few common examples.  If you are uncertain as to whether an activity is a Carmel Central School District approved activity; please contact Chris Salumn, Director of Athletics, for further information and/or guidance.
