Carmel High School Music Groups Celebrate the ’60s

Music fans and district community members were transported back to the 1960s through the musical stylings of the many Carmel High School extracurricular music groups at the annual CCSD Pops Concert.

The event was the first in-person district concert since January 2020, and the students and community were eager to be back.

Student performers at CHS Pops Concert Students from Carmel High School’s Jazz Band, Singers, Symphony Orchestra, Freshman Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble treated attendees to their renditions of popular 1960s songs including Soul Bossa Nova, California Dreamin’, I’m a Believer, Secret Agent Man and more.

“I am so proud of our students for their performance in our ‘welcome back’ to in-person concerts,” said Meghan Cabral, director of music for the District. “So many parents and community members came out to support the students and the music department, and I was overwhelmed with gratitude.”

“The concert perfectly showcased the amazing talent of our students and the dedication of our fantastic educators,” said Superintendent Mary-Margaret Zehr. “I congratulate them all on an outstanding performance.”

The concert also included a performance from a district faculty group, which comprised current and retired district music teachers. Cabral called the performance an amazing addition to the annual Pops Concert.

After the final performance, the department and students honored music teacher Dawn Bohin as it was her last Pops Concert as a Carmel educator. Bohin has been at Carmel High School for 33 years, working as the concert band director, and she plans to retire at the conclusion of the school year. Music Department Chair Cabral directed Bohin’s attention to the student performers who all held up signs thanking Bohin for all that she has done for them over the years.

“When I looked at the students and saw the sea of signs, it was overwhelming,” said Bohin. “I have been so fortunate to have these wonderful students all these years and to share my love of music with them. When I retire at the end of this school year after being in the District for 33 years, the image of that support from those students will last a lifetime.”
