From Eric Stark, Acting Superintendent of Schools

July 1, 2020

Dear Carmel Community:

Our district finds itself in a time of transition and change in the coming months. This is not only true as we continue to navigate our new normal in the wake of COVID-19, but also as our district seeks to hire a new Superintendent of Schools. It is my pleasure, however, to be given the opportunity as Acting Superintendent to partner with you as we continue to provide a quality education to the students of the Carmel Central School District. We cannot overcome obstacles and inequities alone--collaboration with the community is vital.

My role as Acting Superintendent is to provide a smooth transition from the departure of Andy Irvin through the next step in finding a new Superintendent. It has been a pleasure to work with Mr. Irvin for the last twelve years. I would like to thank him for the leadership he provided in bringing the district’s mission and vision to life and for his caring dedication to ensuring that we focus on what is best for students.

As you may be aware, I have been in the district since 1999, first as a Social Studies teacher at Carmel High School. I am now in my 15th year as the Assistant Superintendent for Business. I have had many opportunities and experiences during my years in Carmel and they have given me great insight on many levels. This will support a smooth transition.

The most pressing question we face now is, “What school will be like in the fall?” Please know our Re-entry Teams have been working diligently to review various educational options for our students and to develop a solid plan. We await formal guidance from the Governor and necessary information from the NYS Education Department before we can finalize this plan. Yet, we are anxious to have our students back in our schools, learning and creating. We must do this safely. My goal is to provide ongoing correspondence to keep the community aware of the work of the district and updates from the State Education Department.

In the meantime, our administrative team remains committed to supporting our students and I encourage you to seek them out to share questions or concerns. This is a time of change and growth for all of us and by working together, we can positively impact the direction of our school district.

The Board of Education has begun the search for an Interim Superintendent and our next Superintendent, with the expectation of filling the position by January 1, 2021. Until then, I look forward to helping us position our district, as well as a new Superintendent, for continued success.
