New Staff Mentor Program

The Carmel Central School New Staff Mentor Program was created to support our new teachers, both novice and experienced, as their professional journey begins in the Carmel Central School District. The CCSD Mentor Program offers the opportunity to create a professional learning community with norms of collaboration, high expectations, equity, ongoing inquiry and reflective practice. In partnership with the Carmel Teachers' Association, the CCSD Mentor Program works through highly effective mentor matching, monthly in-service courses and open communication throughout the year.  We utilize the CCSD Continuum which focuses on reflective practice in eight criteria areas.  The book "Framework for Teaching" by Charlotte Danielson lays the foundation for this continuum and professional conversations. This continuum is used in the APPR process and evaluations. We begin our year with a summer orientation for all new staff and their mentors. Topics such as Peer Coaching, The APPR Process, The Art of Mentoring, IEP Direct, eSchool and eChalk are included on the packed agenda. In addition, Board of Education Members, District and School Administrators, and CTA Officers have the opportunity to meet new staff and welcome them into the Carmel Central Schools Community. Ultimately, by supporting new staff and providing professional development that supports teacher growth and models best practice, we are increasing student achievement!
